Yuan Ze University professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering led graduate students to design an effective artificial intelligence deep model, reform the Efficientnet architecture published by Google AI in 2019. Match the special learning rate setting technology and combine the model optimization algorithm, enhance the precision during the competition period. The prediction model has become the 19th in the world out of the nearly 3,000 participating teams (top 1% in the world) and won a silver award of the "APTOS 2019 Retinopathy Detection Competition" in the global Kaggle competition.
Professor Chen said that, among all the online data resources, Kaggle, owned by Google, which is a data modeling and data analysis competition platform dedicated to promoting the progress of artificial intelligence (AI). Kaggle organized competitions by cooperating with various companies or research institutions. Participants can use the data provided on the platform and learn from the computing resources.
One of the competitions is the detection of diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is the leakage of blood vessels in diabetic patients due to long-term hyperglycemia. It is caused by retinal blood vessels, damage to retinal tissues so that the sight of the patient becomes blurred and distorted or partially blind.
Student Wu told that the team used data sets to help identify diabetic retinopathy automatically, also help find the superficial factors that cause lifelong blindness. Not only can it help people prevent lifelong blindness, but it also reduces the gap between medical resources development of urban and rural areas. Another student of the Department of Electrical Engineering said that in order to achieve the best benefit of the model, they design a user interface and combine the model to make the detection results of diabetic retinopathy specific and allow the user interface easy to on-hands.
Far Eastern Memorial Hospital, a subsidiary of the Far East Group’s rich medical imaging database, can combine with the artificial intelligence team of Yuan Ze University to integrate AI technology into clinical workflow and conducts deep pathological analysis. Therefore, if the AI-assisted interpretation of retinopathy images technology is applied, it can solve the current shortage of medical resources in rural areas.
